Around 2005, BNFL began to sell their assets and eventually allowed their work to continue by breaking up the British Nuclear Group, creating companies such as Sellafield Ltd., named after the Sellafield nuclear site, to deal with the decomissioning and limited operation of legacy nuclear fuels systems and plants. In the 1980s, BNFL became a public limited company, thus changing their name to British Nuclear Fuels plc., though it was still shorted to "BNFL". A large amount of these subsidiary companies were formed into a group known as the British Nuclear Group. BNFL began to create a vast amount of subsidiaries, one department at a time making the UKAEA more and more obsolete. (BFNL) was created by the UK Government from the production division of UKAEA. Had those filters not been in place, the damage done would have been unthinkable. Of course, following the disaster, Cockroft was celebrated as a saviour. Britain survived this disaster due to the filters erected on each of the chimeys which were known as "Cockroft's Folly", named after their inventor and considered a folly at the time. Fans would blow air through the core and into chimneys and out into the open air. Due to fears of water cooling failing, air cooling was used instead. The Windscale site, now known as Sellafield, is well known today due to the 1957 fire cauesd by excessive reductions in safety mechanisms and the overall poor design of the site. One of its most famous endevours was Windscale, a plutonium, and later also tritium production plant was built to produce fuels for nuclear weapons in the race against America and the Soviet Union, one which Britian would ultimately lose. The UKAEA was founded in the 1950s and seemingly existed as the sole authority on atomic energy. When Britain first began producing nuclear energy, a research authority known as the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) was formed. The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, British Nuclear Fuels Ltd.
